Upcoming Referendum 

Two upcoming referendums, the Thirty-Ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023 and the Fortieth Amendment of the Constitution (Care) Bill 2023, will take place on Friday, 8 March 2024.

Polling Stations Open from 7am to 10pm.

Polling Station Changes

Voters are reminded that some polling station locations in the greater Longford Town area and Cullyfad have changed:

  1. Longford town and its environs were divided into four new Polling Districts: Longford Central North, Longford Central West, Longford Central East and Longford Central South
  2. The polling location for Corboy electors was changed from St Joseph’s National School to Cullyfad Community Centre

Please check your polling information card to make sure you are going to the correct location to cast your vote in the Referendums on Family and Care on Friday, 8 March.

It is important to note that the Teagasc Office in Longford Town is no longer in use as a polling station. As above, details of your new polling station location are included on your polling information card.

The townlands that historically voted at Teagasc Offices have been moved to St John’s National School and St Michael’s National School (see below).

Check you are registered to vote

Check you are on the register by visiting CheckTheRegister.ie. Alternatively, you can contact Longford County Council by phone to 043 334 35 07 or 043 334 42 24. You can also email franchise@longfordcoco.ie.

To vote in the referendums you must be:

  • An Irish Citizen
  • At least 18 years of age on polling day
  • Ordinarily resident at the address in the constituency in which you wish to vote
  • Your name must be on the Register of Electors

Not on the Register or need to update your details?

The date to register to vote for the first time at the upcoming referendum has now passed.

However, you may still Register to vote or update your details in respect of any other electoral events this year.

Request an application form to have your name included or your details amended on the Register of Electors by calling us on 043 334 35 07 or 043 334 42 24. You can also email franchise@longfordcoco.ie.

Postal and Special Voters

The date to apply to be included on postal or special voter lists for the upcoming referendum has now passed.

However, you may still register to be included on the postal or special voter listsin respect of any other electoral events this year.

If you are unable to vote in person due to an illness or disability or are a resident in a hospital, nursing home or similar institution, and you are not on the Postal Voters List or Special Voters List, you can apply to be included in those lists.

Specific criteria for each category can be found on the application form, which must be completed following the notes on the form.

Voters with Physical Illness or Physical Disability

The date to apply to use this service at the upcoming referendum has now passed.

Voters with a physical illness or physical disability, whose name is not on the postal or special voters list, and who may have difficulty gaining access to their local polling station may apply to have their vote transferred to a more accessible polling station in their Constituency. This facility is intended to assist voters who find access to their local polling station difficult.

To avail of the facility, voters should apply to the Returning Officer for Longford-Westmeath by Friday, 1 March 2024 at the latest.

If possible, voters should suggest an alternative polling station in the constituency which is both suitable and convenient to them.
